Hi @David_26,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP 17z-ca000 laptop automatically shutting down after 3 hours of sleep, which might be related to power settings, updates, or other underlying issues.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve this:

1. Check Power Settings:

  • Open the Control Panel and go to Power Options.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your active power plan.
  • Select Change Advanced Power settings.
  • In the new window, expand the Sleep section and check the settings for Sleep after, Hibernate after, and Allow wake timers. Ensure that no settings are forcing the laptop to shut down after 3 hours.

2. Disable Fast Startup:

Fast Startup may sometimes cause issues, so try disabling it:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Under Shutdown settings, uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save changes and restart your laptop.

3. Check for Windows Updates:

Ensure that your laptop is fully updated:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Check for updates and install any pending updates.

4. Update or Rollback Drivers:

An outdated or corrupted driver might be causing this behavior.

  • Go to Device Manager (right-click the Start menu and select it).
  • Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and Batteries.
  • Right-click on each item and select Update driver.
  • If the problem started after an update, you can also try rolling back the driver (select Properties > Driver tab > Rollback driver).

5. Check Event Viewer for Errors:

The Event Viewer might provide some insight into why the laptop is shutting down.

  • Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
  • In the left pane, expand Windows Logs and select System.
  • Look for any critical errors or warnings around the time your laptop turns off and see if any relate to power settings or hardware issues.

6. Perform a Battery Calibration:

If the battery is acting up, calibrating it can sometimes resolve sleep-related issues.

  • Let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts off.
  • Fully charge the battery without interruption.
  • Check if the problem persists.

7. Perform a System File Check (SFC):

System corruption could be the issue. Running an SFC scan may help.

  • Press Win + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  • Allow it to complete and fix any detected issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
