HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15-dk1035nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently bought a HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop and it will only charge while the lid is closed. With the lid open it does not charge. There is no charging icon while plugged in and lid open. There is no white light while lid is open and plugged in. There is however an orange light while its plugged in and lid closed. This issue is truly annoying as I can only use my brand new laptop for about 2 hours before the battery dies.

Things I have tried...

- I updated all the current Windows updates and drivers.

- I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the Microsoft AC adaptor and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method battery drivers.

- I have run a battery diagnostic. The battery is fine.

- I checked for a new BIOS. My current BIOS in F.11. The HP website says the current version for my computer F.33vA. However I tried to update my BIOS through HP support Assistant and Windows Device Manager and they both say I already have the latest version installed. I then tried to manually update my BIOS through a USB drive. I got all the way to where I could update it but I couldn't because I needed to be plugged into a power source to update to the new BIOS. Because my main issue is that the computer will only charge while the lid is closed, the computer will not update the BIOS because it thinks there is no power to it, when in fact it is plugged in. Its like a logic loop. It needs to be plugged in to update, but it will not recognize it is plugged in.

I would really like this issue fixed! Its my first PC and I'm not tech PC savy (I'm a MAC guy) It's right out of the box and wont even charge. Seems like a new computer should be able to do a basic thing like charge while being plugged in. Help.

@dxbenne2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Reinstalling Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:

Step 1: Click the Windows “Start” button and right-click “Computer.”

Step 2: Click “Manage,” then “Device Manager.”

Step 3: Click the “Batteries” section. A list of devices will appear.

Step 4: Right-click the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” device and click “Uninstall.”

Step 5: Click the “Action” menu item and “Scan for Hardware Changes” to reinstall the driver.

Restart the computer and check for the issue.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I appreciate the help. As I stated in my original post...I already tried this. I tried it once again just in case, following the steps you described and it still does not work.  What else can I try?

@dxbenne2

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. Since you have already tried most of the troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.
I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.  While doing the recovery there is an option to back up your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows)You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
