Pavilion 17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

PC does not turn on...

- PC is runnig WIN 10, Upgraded to a 500 Gb SSD a year ago without any issue

- Power LED is on. When pushing power button for a few seconds, LED goes off for a second then on again

- No battery inserted (it is completely worn out)

- Tried another power adapter

- Replaced RTC battery

- Reseated memory

- Tried "hard reset" by removing power, then pushing the power button for 30 seconds

Any other suggestion, short of swapping the motherboard ?

@ChuckB6 Considering everything you've mentioned so far, it's best you get the device repaired via HP as it seems to be a hardware malfunction and I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

@ChuckB6 Have you attempted to connect the device to an alternate power cord or adapter?

Or check with another wall outlet, excluding any surge protectors to check if it works?

While you respond to that, here's  the best way to resolve the issue, using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:

CLICK HERE FOR STEP BY STEP GUIDE

(simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).

If the above doesn't help or the steps are insufficient, check the below steps:

Let's start with a hard reset of your notebook computer before you try any other troubleshooting steps.

Reasons for a hard reset

A hard reset has the following effects:

  • Clears the memory.

  • Reestablishes the connection between the BIOS and the hardware

The following conditions can be helped by the hard reset:

  • Windows stop responding.

  • The display suddenly goes blank.

  • The computer does not wake from sleep or hibernate modes.

  • Software applications freeze or fail to respond.

Hello

Thanks for your answer !

As indicated above,  I

"- Tried another power adapter

- Replaced RTC battery

- Reseated memory

- Tried "hard reset" by removing power, then pushing the power button for 30 seconds"

More genrerally I browsed through  this forum and the web, dowloaded the maintenance guide, etc. A whole part of the indicated steps (running diag programs, etc) cannot be executed as the system does not even boot at BIOS level. The "best" result I could reach was to have the fan running at full speed (when I disconnected the audio/USB circuit)

So unless someone has another "magic trick", I think I'll have to replace the MB. The PC is not the youngest but has still reasonnable caracteristics, even compared to today's standards : i5, 17 inch screen, 8 Gb DDR3 RAM, SSD (self updated)

I'll leave a note here to let the community know the outcome.

To give an end to this strory :

The problem was indeed HW.

Even if the PC was not the youngest one, the characteristics of the PC were still reasonnable (i5, upgraded to SSD,...) But a reparation via official ways would have been probably too expensive (i have seen MB's for > 400$). Luckily I managed to find a second-hand MB for a reasonnable price. Then  the audio/USB circuit also proved broken and I had to replace it too.

It took some time, but final result is a reasonably fast running PC for the third of the price of a new one. It is also an ecologically sound solution.
