My laptop battery does not charge

Pavillion Notebook 15-ab101ax
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For roughly a couple of weeks I have not been able to charge my laptop battery. I can only use the laptop when with cable plugged in and the battery sits at 0%.  When I hover my mouse over the battery icon on the taskbar it says "0% availble (plugged in, not charging).

I bought the laptop in early 2016.

My laptop battery does not charge

Hello, @NCinquina - Greetings!

Thanks for reaching out! I'd like to help 🙂

I see that you are having trouble charging your HP notebook. Appreciate all your troubleshooting efforts so far 🙂

Let's perform a battery test as well as an adapter test to determine any hardware defects. Here are the steps:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc to get the Startup menu. Now press F2 key.
  3. The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.
  4. Select the "Component test" and then select "battery test" from the list.
  5. Once done, perform an adapter test as well.
  6. Let me know if the test passes or not.

Go to http://hp.care/2cMZFxJ and perform the tests under “Testing and calibrating the battery using HP PC Diagnostics UEFI (preferred method)”. Make sure to do the test for both battery and the adapter.

If the test passes, perform a battery calibration as well as mentioned under “Manually Calibrating the battery” and check.

Thanks, I’ll watch for your reply!

Good luck 🙂

My laptop battery does not charge

Hi thanks for the reply.

I did the battery test and the component failed. "Battery Check: Primary - Replace (40).

So I guess its obvious I will have to buy a new battery. Is this common only after a year? I know someone who has the exact laptop and bought it from the same store and the same time. He is also having this issue.

Hello, @NCinquina

It certainly looks like the battery is failed with your HP machine 😞 You can try to replace the battery to try and fix the issue.

Contact the HP phone support to get the battery replacement options.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help!

Cheers 🙂
