It’s just nearly a year now since I got my laptop, and it’s just happened today that it didn’t fit in the charging hole. I haven’t touched it for a while so I’m not entirely up to date with it.

I understand you have issues plugging the adapter into the laptop.
Don't worry I'll to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your laptop?
Have you tried charging your laptop using a different adapter?
Please provide the product number of your laptop to assist you better.
As you mentioned you have issues plugging the adapter into the laptop.
Try plugging a different adapter into your PC and check if you are able to charge your PC.
Check if the pin inside the DC or charging port is bent or broken.
Also, check if the dust or anything has accumulated inside charging port or on the charging pin on the adapter.
If the issue still persists, please contact HP support for service options.
