My notebook has been hanging up a lot lately and has occasionally rebooted itself.  This morning the touch pad mouse is not working at all - I have run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Window 3.1.0.0 and everything shows as PASSED.  Any suggestions of what I can do to try to diagnose and fix the mouse problem as well as the hanging up issues?  Would appreciate any help - thank you

I understand how it must be to deal with both the touchpad not working and your notebook hanging or rebooting unexpectedly. Thank you for already running the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics   that’s a great first step. 
To help you further, I’ll need the exact HP notebook model you’re using ?

 

In the meantime, here are  few steps you can try :

 

1.Check Touchpad Enable Settings

Sometimes the touchpad gets disabled through settings or a shortcut key.

Press Fn + F5/F6/F9 (varies by model) or go to Settings → Devices → Touchpad

Ensure the touchpad toggle is set to On

If your notebook has a small LED on the touchpad, double-tap it to enable

 

2.Update or Reinstall Touchpad Driver

Driver issues can cause the touchpad to stop responding.

Open Device Manager → Mice and other pointing devices

Right-click your touchpad driver (e.g., Synaptics, ELAN)

Select Update driver → choose Search automatically

If no update is found, select Uninstall device, then restart your notebook to reinstall

 

3.Run Windows Updates

Pending updates can cause instability and hardware issues.

Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update

Click Check for updates

Install all critical and optional updates

Restart your notebook after updates

 

4.Check for Overheating or Resource Usage

Frequent hangs and reboots may be linked to overheating or high CPU usage.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Task Manager

Monitor CPU and memory usage

End tasks consuming excessive resources

Ensure vents are clear and notebook is on a hard surface

 

5.Perform HP System BIOS Update

A BIOS update can resolve hardware compatibility issues.

Visit HP Support https://support.hp.com/  → Drivers & Downloads → Enter your notebook model

Download the latest BIOS update

Follow on-screen instructions carefully

Ensure notebook is plugged in during update

 

These steps should help narrow down whether the issue is software-related or hardware-related.
