I didn't even know what USB C was a year ago when I bought this laptop. Now that I know what USB C can do I would love to have a one port docking solution. In other words, displays, peripherals AND laptop charging using only the USB C port. At the very least, a monitor, keyboard and charging.

So the question is, can this laptop recharge using the USB C port? The original power brick with its tunnel type connector is a very hefty 200W. Is my laptop hardware even able accept/use that much power through the USB C or would irreparable damage occur? It looks like most docking devices can deliver 60W - 100W in PDS, plus one from Dell that can do 180W. Would anything lower than the barrel power supply of 200W charge this laptop (even if slower)? Would it charge if 200W was supplied through the USB C port?

The port is technically USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C™ with Thunderbolt™ 3 (40 Gb/s signaling rate, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge); (I wish it could do DP 1.4! and I know "Sleep and Charge" refers to charging devices attached to your PC when it's in Sleep Mode)

Thanks,

Thomas

In theory Yes but finding a compatible charger is nearly impossible because it is a hungry machine. Some members say few 90W USB-C chargers can charge it over night or during very little work. I have not seen higher wattage USB-C chargers. I know the following example

Just say battery is a 10L bucket, it has a hole which will drain water of full bucket in 5 hours. Now you pour water in 1L each hour. You can work out why the charger can't charge battery on your machine when machine is running.

Note: You are saying Dell has 180W USB-C charger, it may work. I used to borrow many toys to test at home but not now.

Regards.
