Reinstalled system as factory and ran same testing as others. Found my BIOS ver. F.12 and HP web site version F.10!

Sent to HP for repair(gone week)  and they replaced the CD/DVD drive! Did Not fix the problem.

restored to factory new. HP Support program displayed BIOS version F.21 available!

installed but still same problem!

Does Anyone have a solution?. Owned computer less than 1.5 weeks!

Hey there! @DontKnowWell, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand the optical drive on your laptop has stopped functioning.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Is the CD\DVD drive listed in device manager?

Have you tried checking with different CD\DVD's?

What kind of DVD's are you trying to play on your laptop?

Please share the product number of your PC to assist you better.

If the DVD drive is listed in device manager try the steps recommended below.

You can try updating the drivers using the HP support assistant.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

Also, Please try the below steps.

Click Start on the Left Bottom of the Screen.
Click Start Search
Type “regedit” and Hit Enter
On the Left hand Pane you can find H-Key-Local Machine.
On the Left side of H-Key-Local Machine you can find “>” sign Click on that “>” Sign.
You can find “System”, just click on beside its “>” sign.
Where you can find “Current Control Set”, just click on beside its “>” sign.
Where you can find “Control”, just click on beside on its “>” sign.
Where you can find “Class”, just click on beside on its “>” sign.
Please look for “{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}”, just click on it(Not on the arrow beside it)
In the right side of the pane you can find ‘Upper Filter’
Please select ‘Upper Filter’and delete it.
Then choose the Lower filter and delete it.

Also, Uninstall the CD/DVD drivers from device manager.

Hold Windows key + Letter R key.

Run dialog box would open type devmgmt.msc

Device manager window will open.

Expand CD/DVD from the list.

Right click on the DVD drive click uninstall.

Restart your PC and check if the DVD drive is ejecting by itself.

Try reseating the DVD drive as last resort.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps it is a hardware issue with the optical drive, please replace the faulty optical drive on your PC.

Let me know if this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

Tried all of the listed suggestions including HP assistant, BIOS update, regedit setting adjustment and all have failed.

HP also replaced the e drive, under warranty!

I have also tried different players and they all play the audio cd (.cda files) for 2 minutes and 56 seconds!

I also noticed others having the same problem on the 17-ca0064 computer. Is this a “systemic software issue”?

@DontKnowWell, Thanks for writing back to us.

I appreciate your efforts in trying out the steps.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Have you tried checking with a different audio CD\DVD?

  • Clean the disc and check for damage: Clean any dust or smudges from the disc with filtered water and a lint free cloth. If there is significant damage to the playing surface, replace the disc.

  • Test several different disc types: Load CDs and DVDs that are known to work in other disc players. If all discs of the same type do not play, make sure the drive supports that disc type.

Test the drive for a hardware failure

Over time, vibration, dust, and mechanical wear impact CD/DVD drive performance. Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to test the drive for hardware issues.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Press the power button to turn on the computer, and then immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.

    Startup Menu

  3. Press F2 to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

  4. Click Component Tests.

Selecting Component Tests from the main menu

  5. Click Optical Drive, and then run all the available tests. Have a working CD or DVD available to complete the tests. Each test takes 1 to 2 minutes to run.

Selecting Optical Drive in the Component Tests menu

  6. Follow any instructions to resolve any issues found, and then test a disc in the drive.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps it is a hardware issue with the laptop.

I will share out few details through a private message about the service options for your laptop.

Please watch your inbox for more information.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

Those were some of the 1st things I did but nothing helped.

I’m a retired test/process engineer that worked at the old AT&T then Lucent Technologies. Then went to Honeywell working on aircraft nav. equipment.

I have a 2005 HP laptop I converted from Xp to 7 to 10.

But the one that’s the problem is the brand new 17-ca0064 I bought!
