HP Spectre 15-eb0000 x360 Convertible Laptop PC RCTO Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

I bought and installed a replacement battery (BNO6XL) for my PC. It starts up fine with the AC cord plugged in, and works fine after unplugging the cord. However, when starting up without the AC cord, I will get to my desktop, and about 10-20 seconds later the computer shuts off without warning.

I ran a battery test which came back with failure ID 9GSA28-A7CBPA-MFPU3F-C0BS23. I reached out to the seller and they sent me another battery. I installed it, booted it with the AC cord and did a battery check which came back fine.

After I charged the battery to 100% I decided to try to start the PC without the AC cord, and got the same problem again: PC boots to login screen, then to desktop, 10-20 seconds go by, then black screen.

I ran a battery check and this time it came back failed, with error failure ID 9GSA28-A7WBPF-MFPU3F-C0DS23. I am not sure how to proceed. I am a student and need the computer to boot from battery, but I am not sure if purchasing a battery straight from HP will solve the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

If you put the original battery back in the laptop does it work?

What is the part number of the battery that you installed?

It must be the same as is bolded in the next line.
Battery (6 cell, 72 WHr, 3.16 AHr, Li-ion; includes cable)   HP part number L68299-005

Buying a battery from HP will not make any difference.

My parts reference is the Maintenance & Service guide for your laptop's model series (Ch 3, pg 19, item 14

Thank you for your help. The battery I installed is not produced by HP directly; however the battery is listed under L68299-005 L68235-1C1 part numbers:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09NKSZT8T

The battery I removed from the PC is L68235-1C1 (the same). I still have it, though I am not able to put it back in because it is severely swollen (hence the need for battery replacement) to the point where it was bending the laptop casing.

I am not sure what is causing the issue. Is it something I need to do software-wise? Or do I need to buy a battery produced/distributed by HP?

Thank you again!

You're welcome.

You need a battery that is L68299-005.

You don't need to buy one from HP.

This has nothing to do with software.

A laptop battery is a hardware device that communicates with the laptop at the firmware level on one of its SMBus internally to provide messages and  status.

I will try a different battery...will update

Update: ordered and installed an HP-brand battery from Newegg; everything works properly. It seems that third-party batteries, though listed under proper part numbers, do in fact cause issues in HP notebooks!

Thank you for your assistance.
