I have an hp probook 4530s with a pentium b940 processor. What is the most powerful processor I can replace it with (i7-2670qm; i7-2620m)?

And what will be the temperature? Because the b940 tdp is 35w and the 2670qm is 45w.
And what do you need for this? Update bios?

I will be grateful for the answer) 🙂

Below is the link to the service manual.

Chapter 1 has the list of supported processors.

Looking at chapter 3, there is only two heat sinks...one for the onboard Intel graphics and one for the AMD graphics.

This user benchmarking site shows that folks have installed the i7-2670QM processor in the model series.

You can read the release notes under the revision history section to see if you want to or have to update the BIOS.

@Paul_Tikkanen,

Btw, the very best compatible 45-watt TDP processor the OP could pick is the Intel Core i7-2860QM (4-Cores, 8-Threads, 2.50 GHz up to 3.60 GHz).

An an FYI: this processor can be purchased for less than $40 (including shipping and tax/tariffs) via this eBay Seller: Intel Core i7 2860QM SR02X 2.5GHz Quad Core 8M Socket G2 CPU Processor | eBay.

Kind Regards,

What about the temperature? Because the pentium b940 has a TDP of 35w. And the i7 2670qm has 45w.
And is it difficult to update the bios? Because I have the worst version. Is it risky? And is it dangerous?

Thanks. But I'm a little scared to update bios. But this is necessary (and not only to replace the processor). But will this processor work for sure? I have a radeon hd 7470m

@Sillia11

As I posted earlier, there is only one heat sink used for the notebooks with the AMD GPU which means it is rated to support both the 35W and 45W processors.

Regarding the i7-2860QM...it's not listed in the service manual as a supported processor, and not one of the 799+ reports on the userbenchmark site for the model series indicate that anyone installed that processor, so you will have to take NonSequitur777's word that the i7-2860QM processor is guaranteed to work.

Theoretically, it should but that is all I can say about that particular processor.

You'll have to decide for yourself whether or not you want to risk updating the BIOS.

No one here can or will make that decision for you.

Did you read the BIOS release notes I posted?

Did any of the BIOS updates add support for the processor you want to install?

I don't see that any of the BIOS updates added support for processors or processor microcodes which leads me to believe that any of the processors listed in the manual will work with whatever BIOS update your notebook has installed.

Watch this video for how to update the BIOS in Windows.

@Sillia11,

Like @Paul_Tikkanen referenced, the 45-watt Intel Core i7-2670QM as per Userbenchmark HP System ProBook 4530s is compatible with your laptop.  Moreover, when you look at applicable 45-watt Intel Core processors, the best available aka most powerful processor happens to be the i7-2860QM -same TDP, same D2 Stepping.

This is the exact same logic I applied to my HP ProBook 6560b, which I also upgraded to an i7-2860QM -incidentally, not the first time this came up in this Community.  Like Paul mentioned, your laptop is compatible with 45-watt TDP processors. Btw, I noticed that once I installed the i7-2860QM in my ProBook, the thermals actually decreased compared with the 35-watt processor it replaced.  Whether this was due to applying fresh quality thermal paste (Arctic MX-4), or because the processor didn't have to 'work' as hard, who can tell.

Kind Regards,
