Hp laptop model 15-dy5013ca 

trying to find out what it means when it says in the specs - standard memory 16gb (8x2) 

               Maximum memory 64 gb

can i upgrade to 32 gb and use 16gb in each slot ?

Yes, you can install 2 x 16 GB of memory in the notebook.

Will it run faster?

I doubt you will see much of an improvement because 16 GB is usually enough memory for most applications.

Run the Windows Resource Monitor app and see how much free memory your notebook has with 16 GB of memory installed.

If there is 8 GB or more free memory showing in the report, I don't really see the need to install 32 GB.

I have 32 GB in my PC and the resource monitor shows that the PC has 26.9 GB of free memory, so installing 32 GB of memory in my PC was overkill.

If you want to upgrade the memory, I recommend Crucial memory:

HP only has the service manual for the original 15-dy0xxx model series, but it should be of help to you for opening up the notebook to upgrade the memory.
