HP Laptop - 17-by3065st
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm having to replace the non-backlit top cover assembly with keyboard for my 1hp model 17-by5065sf because the things that hold the screws for the hinges have broken apart. While I was searching for a replacement, I foiund a version for my computer with a BACKLIT keyboard attached to the top cover assembly. If I replace my broken top cover assembly with the backlit version, will the backlighting on the keyboard work, or does there have to be some special extra connection on the motherboard or something nin order for the backlighting to work; or is the power for the backlighting integrated into the backlit keyboard that is permanently attached to the top cover/keyboard/palmrest assembly?

Hi @Hugh_Lett,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

You cannot replace non-backlit keyboard with a backlit one.

I suggest that you contact HP Service Center in your location from this weblink: https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/service-center who will assist you in replacing the keyboard.
Note: Select your country from the dropdown,  enter the city or postal code, select the product, change the radius, and click on search to locate the nearest HP Service center near your location.

Hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

You said,"You cannot replace non-backlit keyboard with a backlit one.".

Why not" Everything is identical on the two keyboard assemblies (backlit and non backlit) except that the backlit keyboard has a cable on it that goes into the connector on the motherboard that says "BL , which according to the service manual  stands for "Back light". My motherboard has the connection port to receive it, which I connected correctly.  Everything else is the same on both Top cover keyboard assemblies. If anything, the keyboardwould simply not light up. There's no reason why the computer would not turn on at all. When I press the power button (after the power connector light turns white from orange to indicate that the battery is fully charged), the light on the Caps Lock on the keyboard lights up for about 1/2 a second, then nothing else happens.
