HP Spectre 13T x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Edit: After completely draining power (orange light went out), I was able to turn the system on with the charger plugged in. It now charges properly and correctly registers if it is or isn't plugged in.

---

Purchased the HP Spectre 13T in November of last year. I noticed last night, as I was going to bed, that the laptop was registering as "plugged in (charging)" despite being unplugged. Also noticed that the keyboard backlight was on, which I've always left turned off.

Today the same status persists and the laptop won't charge (tried both USB-C ports). I have even turned the laptop off and unplugged the cord, but the orange "charging" light stays on (after another day, the battery drained enough for the light to go off - still will not charge or turn on). I tried uninstalling the battery drivers in Device Manager. A moderately similar issue in this forum had the suggestion of restoring BIOS defaults, which I also tried.

I glanced at a battery removal video, as that seems to be a common suggestion for this issue (Win 10 in general), but the Spectre's battery removal seemed a bit complicated. Seems to be clips and an adhesive pull tab (not reusable) to navigate, so I didn't want to mess with it.

Is there a chance that completely draining the battery might help, or is there something else that can be attempted?

Welcome to HP support community.

Run test on battery test to check for any hardware failure

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.

4. Click component test then select battery.

5. Click Run once, or Loop until error. While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen.

I have a few steps listed below that should help you resolve this concern:

Unplug the charge and use the laptop until the battery drains to 15%.

Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager:
1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.

2) Expand “Batteries”.

3) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

4) Click on “Uninstall”.

5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver

6) Shutdown the computer.

7) Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in.

😎 When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.

9) Go to Device Manager.

10) Expand Batteries.

11) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"

Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

I hope that helps.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.
