Hello, I've recently acquired an HP 17 Pavillion laptop and it wasn't powering on. Tried a new power adapter, still nothing. Opened up the back and replaced the swollen battery, placed it on the charger and still nothing even several hours later. No fan or beeps or sounds of booting up at all. What else could it be. It's only from 2019. Thank you.

Hi @BuzzFish,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
If your HP Pavilion - 17-ar050wm is not powering on even after replacing the power adapter and battery, and there are no signs of life such as fan noise or booting sounds, it suggests a deeper hardware issue. Here are some steps to further diagnose and possibly resolve the problem:
1. Check Power Supply and Adapter
- Ensure the new adapter is compatible with your laptop in terms of voltage and amperage.
- Test the adapter with a multimeter to ensure it’s delivering power.
2. Power Reset
- Disconnect everything: Remove the battery and disconnect the power adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter (without the battery) and try to power on the laptop.
3. Inspect Internal Connections
- Open the back panel again and check all connections, especially around the power jack and battery connection to the motherboard.
- Ensure RAM and storage devices are properly seated.
4. Check for Indicators
- Look for any LED lights on the laptop when connected to power. Sometimes, an LED on the power button or near the charging port can indicate power issues.
5. CMOS Battery
- Replace the CMOS battery (a small coin-cell battery on the motherboard). A dead CMOS battery can sometimes prevent the laptop from powering on.
Kindly find the next steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @BuzzFish,
Please find the next steps below.
6. External Display
- Connect an external monitor to rule out display issues. Although it’s unlikely, sometimes the laptop appears dead due to display failures.
7. Test the RAM
- Reseat or replace the RAM modules. Faulty RAM can prevent the laptop from booting.
8. Motherboard Check
- Inspect the motherboard for any visible signs of damage like burnt components or loose solder joints.
- Check for liquid damage. If the laptop has been exposed to any liquid, it might have caused a short.
9. External Hardware Test
- Test with minimal hardware: Disconnect all non-essential peripherals and internal components like the hard drive, optical drive, and any additional RAM sticks. Try to power on the laptop with just the CPU, one RAM stick, and the display connected.
10. Professional Diagnosis
- If none of the above steps work, it might be time to consult a professional technician. The issue could be with the motherboard, power circuit, or another critical component that requires specialized equipment to diagnose and repair.
Additional Tips
- Warranty Check: If your laptop is still under warranty, contact HP support for repair or replacement options.
- Replacement Parts: If a specific component is identified as faulty (like the motherboard), sourcing a replacement part might be necessary.
By systematically going through these steps, you should be able to narrow down the cause of the power issue.
If this does not help, I recommend you contact phone support.
