OMEN by HP - 15-dc0024cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am looking to swap the 128 GB SSD (presumably made by Samsung) that came installed on my laptop with a 500GB model (a Crucial P3). When I swapped the drive out, I pressed f11, hoping to enter the recovery menu and install Windows from the recovery partition that is on the 1TB HDD in my system. Instead, I got an error saying a boot device could not be found. I did verify the SSD works by installing it in my desktop, so I have functioing hardware. Can I not install Windows using the recovery partition, and need to make a recovery USB key to do this with HP's built in tool? Or, is this Crucial SSD not compatible with my laptop for some reason?

No, this won't work. You can clone old 128GB to new 500GB first then replace OR use the following way

I used the USB boot drive method, and it worked! I have Windows installed in the on the new SSD and I'm using the computer to type this!

One thing to note is that the hard drive, as in the 1TB HDD, did get completely wiped, so I no longer have the Recovery partition. I do have the USB drive though, so I'll keep that around I case I need to reinstall the software again. I also did find other HP tools to get the Recovery info, so its not a huge deal.  This has allowed me to remove the HDD from the laptop, making it lighter and reducing load on the battery.
