Pavilion dv7-4183cl
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Recently acquired a old laptop from a family member - HP Pavilion dv7-4183cl. Upgraded the old Seagate 500GB hard drive to a Crucial MX500 500GB SSD. Works great. Also added a WD Black 1TB Performance hard drive WD10JPLX to use as a data drive in the secondary hard drive bay. Formatted the WD drive NTFS, same as the primary hard drive. The laptop refuses to recognize the WD drive.  I have installed the old original hard drive and the new SSD in the secondary hard drive bay and the laptop recognizes them both, but not the WD drive. I cloned the WD drive with Acronis True image and the WD drive works perfectly in the primary drive bay, but the BIOS does not recognize it in the secondary drive bay. I'm at my wits end on this seemilngly easy uprgrade. Any help is appreciated. Using Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS.

I finally figured this situation out, thanks to an old forum post from Cloud_Strider.

There are specific dual hard drive configurations that are recognized by the dv7 laptop, and my 500GB primary drive and 1TB secondary drive was not one of them.

I could use (2) 1TB drives, or (2) 500GB drives together and smaller sizes, but not inter mixed.

I installed the original Seagate 500GB drive as my secondary, which now works properly with my primary 500GB SSD.

This is unfortunate as I purchased the WD Black 1TB internal drive I now have no use for. Guess it's up for sale!

Page 6 of the service guide specifies the hard drive configurations:

And thanks again to Cloud_Strider for the info in this old post from 2012:

It is a mystery since HP offered this model even back in the day with a dual 1 TB configuration.

Hi Huffer,

Yea thanks, it is a mystery to me as well. Just the fact it works in the primary hard drive slot and not the secondary has me scratching my head in disbelief. Still looking for a solution.
