Hello,

Recently my Laptop ran completely out of energy. When I charged and started it the next day, charging suddenly became really slow.
It now takes about 20h for one full charge.

 

Battery Analyses Tool says everything is fine.

I searched through the forums and have tried all kinds of things already.

- tried another identical charger

- cleaned charging port
- Deleting and reinstalling the battery driver in Windows

- Discharging and fully recharging

- updating the BIOS to 1.48 and downgrading again to the previous version that I had running without issues for a while
- Hard resetting

 

I didn't have any success with any of those measures. With hard resetting, I get a strange behavior, that the BIOS and startup gets extremely slow (BIOS screen build up takes about 1s) but works normally after the second start.

Anyone any ideas or things I might try?

The documentation I have read through show that your laptop is from the 2017 model year.

 

If that is the original battery, I am not surprised it is not behaving normally.

 

I would think that it is time to replace the battery with a new one.

 

To get a better idea of the state of the battery, use the Windows battery report utility.

I bought the computer as a refurbished just last fall. (according to batter stats the computer was produced in 2018)
The battery generally was still in pretty good shape (easily lasting 7+h)
Battery stats also shows that it's capacity is still over 84% of the design value and only 155 charge cycles.

I am surprised that it is still doing so well.

 

The reality is that it is a battery that will have had six years in use in just a few months.

 

There is no telling just how many of those cycles were as a result of going below 20% of full capacity. That type of discharge, like the one you had, is what makes or breaks a battery.

 

Don't be surprised if out of the blue, it starts shutting down without warning.

 

I would definitely replace the battery with a new one.

 

If I purchase a refurbished laptop, I always replace the battery.

 

Few people have had a laptop battery last beyond the five year mark.

I don't think I ever had a battery fail on me in that way. Usually they just degrade over time and keep having a short and short run time.
Replacing the battery is nice but it's a big expense.

I would like to know if it really is the battery before I get a replacement. I don't understand how this can be charging so slow with HPs own tool not recognizing any issues.

It may give you a better picture of the state of the battery.

Hi
 I ran the Windows report and it doesn't show any error either. The only thing I could see was a drop in capacity (not noticble in use) around April 18th.

I can't see anything there but HTML code. 

Copy and paste as I suggested in the article as that makes it easily understandable human language.

The result of the test won't make things better.

 

The unfortunate fact is that the battery is at least five years old. I expect strange behavior form a battery at that stage of its life cycle. Your inadvertently letting the battery run flat appears to have triggered the bad behavior.

 

There is nothing you can do other besides replace the battery to resolve the issue you are having. That is regardless of HP or Microsoft Windows test results as OK or passing show.

 

This is an unfortunate downside of purchasing a refurbished laptop.  I love refurbished laptops because of  great specifications I get for the low price.  I replace the battery on my own, so it doesn't cost me more than a bit of my time and the cost of the new battery  .

 

The issue you are experiencing is a normal characteristic of a laptop's Lithium Ion battery of all brands. That is why battery manufacturers do not warranty their batteries beyond one year as an industry standard.
