Spectre x360 13t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Today all of a sudden my laptop will not boot. The power light turns on and the caps lock button blinks 5.3. I have read this indicates a hardware issue and tried the solutions on the HP support site with no success (hard reset, BIOS recovery). The charge indicator does not light up and the screen is completely black.

From a quick google search and looking through this forum this seems to be a common issue with this particular laptop. I purchased this laptop in June 2019 so it’s just over a year old and is minimally used. It is not an inexpensive laptop so i am BEYOND upset that the hardware randomly stopped working at just over a year. It’s barely out of warranty. What can I do to rectify this?

Hi

Main-

(Mother)

Board

5.3

The embedded controller times out waiting for the BIOS.

Component is not reachable by BIOS in certain time limit.

1 Reseat component.

2 Test known good component.

3 Replace component or Main-Board as needed.

June 2019 ??????????    2018 ???

In the EU there is a 2 year sellers warranty, IE: the shop where you bought it gives 24 months.

Just for completeness.....

Hopefully one of these documents will cover (and solve) your problem...

Turn off the computer, and then connect the power cord.
Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds.
Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps.
The HP BIOS Update screen displays and the recovery begins automatically. Follow any on-screen prompts to continue the startup to complete the recovery.
HP BIOS Update recovery in progress

If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows key and the V key. If the screen still does not display, your computer might not support the feature or there is a hard drive issue. Continue to the next step to install a BIOS recovery file from the HP website.
If the Power light turns off, the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the button for only 2 to 3 seconds.

Hi,

I tried to recover the BIOS many times with the keyboard shortcut but it just doesn’t go to anything other than a black screen. I tried both the windows+B and +V shortcuts. I just tried from a USB as well with no results. What else can I try?

I bought it in June 2018 so it’s just over a year old and had a 12 month warranty.

Hi

I gotta guess as to your model since you aint posted it.

YOU MUST have the correct BIOS for the Main Board.

I downloaded SP96505 and opened it with 7 zip.

03/05/2019 15:29 10,796,192 0827EF49_WIN.EXE
16/09/2019 22:50  DIR  Crisis
16/09/2019 22:50   DIR  Dos
16/09/2019 22:50   DIR  Shell
16/09/2019 22:49 27,037,824 sp96505.exe

So now I copy the whole lot to a DVD/USB or whatever.

But the above is only an example of what I might do.

Hi again, I have the spectre x360 13t-ae000. I’m not sure what you were instructing in your last reply - I looked up the BIOS on the HP website directly by the serial number of my machine. My laptop does not let me get to a screen where I can do anything about the BIOS though because the screen just remains black and caps lock blinks 5.3.

OK.

So no point in prolonging the agony, and trying to get a fix then.

I just spoke to someone at HP who also felt this was a motherboard failure and said it would be $700 to fix it! She was kindly able to bring the cost down to $455 with a discount but that’s still nearly half what I paid for this laptop.

My concerns are 1. she couldn’t speculate on why this randomly occurred, which makes me seriously doubt the quality of the parts here, and 2. the replacement motherboard has a 3 mo warranty - so I could be paying $500 again next year, if the same issue occurs.

I LOVED this laptop and had hoped by getting a higher end model I could expect more than a year of use before it failed... is there anyone from HP on this board that can escalate this somewhere? I’ve exclusively used HP products since I started using computers at all but will certainly be reconsidering if this is what to expect from their newer products.

thanks
