My HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-ch0xx Battery is swollen... do I have to replace it ?

Or it's that normal ?

I just open for the first time my laptop after 3 years to clean it... I notice the battery was swollen

I know the ion lithium batteries has an internal gel composition.... that's why I'm asking if is normal or not.

The warranty expired last year.

Thanks in advance for your comments

The condition of the battery is not normal - nor is it entirely surprising - this type of battery technology (used in phones and notebooks and whatever) is not perfect.  Batteries can fail in several ways, including becoming a swollen mess.

If the battery has not actually failed already, it will do so.

"Fat" Battery / Bloated Battery / Swollen Battery

  • If the battery is in a swollen or bloated condition, the battery must be removed from the computer and replaced.
  • There are no other remedies, tests, or useful options.

What to do?

The battery must be replaced.

It sounds worse than it is - the battery is right inside the case and you already have the case open.

Thank you so much... @Dragon-Fur

I have already removed the battery from my laptop, and I will order the replacement as soon as possible... in the mean time I'm working plugged directly into the outlet, hoping it won't cause any damage to the machine.

You are welcome.

The computer will be fine running on AC only - the only risk, of course, is that the power might fail.  Rather than letting it sleep when you are done using it for the day, remember to shut it down.

Keep your backups current - perhaps paying a bit more attention than you might otherwise.  Make sure your most critical data is backed up on other than the machine, perhaps a cloud drive, USB drive, "somewhere".

Stay Safe.
