Over a year ago all firmware flash descriptors apparently became permently locked after updating firmware for the Spectre/Meltdown security flaws. Subsequently the BIOS or MEI cannot be updated. For the HP Spectre x2 this issue is documented in the thread: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Spectre-X2-BIOS-Update-Fail.... Since warranty is expired, it would be helpful to know how to place the device into Manaufacturing Programming Mode in order to update the BIOS and MEI. At this point my battery needs replacement so I'm willing to crack the case open to set a jumper or do whatever is necessary to reflash the firmware. There's a lot of information on how to lock Manufacturing Programming Mode for devices that were shipped without completing the final factory settings but nothing on how to unlock MPM. Certainly HP has the capability or keys to do this for devices under warranty.
