Microsoft Windows 11

Have tried to update my BIOS per the HP Support Assistant; HP Pavillion, Product number: 6A2N7EA#ABU.

The process goes as far as the screen prints Screenshot (35).pngScreenshot (34).pngScreenshot (33).png

I simply do not understand the message in the dialogue box regarding not enough disk space. I have GBs of disk space. When I click on the OK button on the rror message I get returned to the original updating page.

@PCBEIHAI,

The disk the error message is referring to is actually the EFI system partition (ESP), which is only 100-260 MB in size.

Apparently, your ESP stores the BIOS update utility, but it finds the ESP just doesn't have enough room for the utility to perform a BIOS update.

If the ESP stores current/previous BIOS files, you may be able to delete them to create more space. See this thread for how to do it.

Have tried to follow these directions. I get as far as typing in C:\Windows\System32>mountvol B: /s. After Enter I get a screed of text explaining various commands and, at the bottom a line that says  'The EFI System Partition is mounted at B:\'. The next line shows C:\Windows\System32>, not C:\Windows\System32>B:. I then try cd B: and get access denied (or similar phrasing). If I look in File Explorer I can see a new Drive B:  If I double click on the Drive B:, I get a message that says I do not have permission for access, and a link that is supposed to take me to the 'Security' section of Control Panel. However, that link only takes me to drive properties dialogues, not to security and such. I am the only user and, therefore the administrator, as shown on the User and Accounts area of Systems settings.

After a lot more reading various help sites on this issue I decided to try going into the Admin mode from the CMD. This seemed to work. I emptied the suggested HP BIOS directories (after copying the existing files to a hard drive) and tried again. Result no different from previous attempts. The saddest part of all this is that HP do not seem to have ANY advice to offer regarding their own routines, except a vague notice that you may have to make more space somewhere on the hard drive.

Yeah, it would be helpful if HP would provide troubleshooting for how to remove files to make more space.

What is the size of your ESP? How many sets of BIOS files (.bin file + signature file) did you remove? Obviously, what you did didn't create enough space.

See delavega79's reply: the entire HP folder was deleted to perform a BIOS update. This is something you can try.

You can also try this workaround: Create a BIOS recovery usb drive and boot from it via a Win + B key method to update the BIOS. The usb drive contains BIOS update utility and update BIOS files but it's not bootable, so you need to use the key combination method to boot into the usb drive. See these HP videos.

HI, Once again. Tried getting rid of the HP folder but not allowed, even when logged in as Administrator. Copied as many sub-directories (approx 35Mb) to my USB hard drive, then deleted from EFI Partition. Tried the update again with the same results. The other methods of USB Boots not feasible. They require the use of a separate computer to download to a USB device etc, which I do not have.

So, now finished a complete backup and going for a reset. BYW there seem to be conflicts with the HP support systems. If I use the HP Support Assistant it told me there was a BIOS update available. Going to the HP support website, and into the Software area, their online service recognises my laptop, and that I have W11 OS. It then requires the choice of the build. My build (45H22) is not listed. The site suggests lookng at appropriate vendor sites for updates!!!

I had previously informed these methods did not work. I have since reset the laptop and am now bring it back to previous condition, hopefully without the EFI difficulties.
