HP Pavilion Power - 15-cb050od
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings.

I have previously upgraded my laptop (HP Pavilion Power - 15 - cb050od) to 16GB about two, almost three years, ago with an 8 GB stick of RAM and an M.2 SSD. I was wondering if and how I can upgrade the RAM to 32GB. My processor is an Intel(r) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz. The current RAM sticks I have are 1 8GB SK Hynix 2400MHz (came with my computer when I originally got it) and 1 8GB 859B 2400MHz (from Crucial when I first upgraded my computer).

So far, I have found some information suggesting that I can upgrade to 32GB of RAM. I have the links to these sources.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/RAM-amp-m-2-SSD-upgrade/td-p/6...

How would I go about upgrading to 32GB if it is indeed doable? I want to do this without causing any problems on my computer and the fourth link hints that it could possibly not work. I just want to know if there are any extra steps I may need to take aside from what I did to upgrade my laptop's RAM originally. There other threads and posts that I have ran into while researching that mention that the BIOS is sometimes involved, causing me to think that there may be additional steps.

I know, it's your laptop so it's your money --but I am curious about why you would want to waste money on an upgrade like this.

Unless you are regularly using the laptop for multi-thread memory-intensive activities (like 3D modeling), adding another 16GB of memory is not going to get you anything useful.  It's not going to make it run any faster or better.

If this were mine, I would instead look into upgrading the m.2 SSD either to a larger one, or to a newer generation that is faster -- but I would buy it from someplace that would easily refund my money because a newer generation m.2 SSD might not work in this specific laptop.

But as I said at the beginning -- it's your laptop, so it's your money.

Thank you for responding.

I am in a computer security class that requires me to run multiple virtual machines with VMware on of my computer (in some cases at the exact same time in the case of doing labs with Windows Server 2019). So far, running them eats up around 8 GB of RAM. Then I need to also have FireFox open to look at the assignments as I do them in the virtual machine, which eats up a bit of RAM itself. Same goes for my anti-virus (Bitdefender) when it decides to either run a scan or update. In my free time, I play games like Age of Empires II: DE, modded Skyrim Special Edition, ESO with addons, and modded Minecraft, which have been a bit memory intensive in their own rights.

So far, this class has made my laptop freeze up once. I will admit I have been booting from my 1 TB hard drive with the previous SSD acting as a secondary storage. I recently learned that I set up the Crucial M.2 SSD wrong (it works, it is just the computer asks me which I want to boot up whenever I boot up my laptop because I went the clean install route instead of cloning) and I had read that loading programs that are on the hard drive run slower if you are booted into the SSD (which I now know to be false as well). I already got a new M.2 (a WD Blue SN550 NVMe) upgrade (it is 1 TB, but at this rate, I may need to return it and get a 2 TB because of the programs and files my college has required me to download over the past 3 to 4 years making my hard drive only have about 180 GB of free space out of 1 TB) about a week ago that I have not got around to putting in yet due to school work eating up time.

Now, if I do the RAM upgrade to 32 GB, would the speed of the RAM have any impacts (good and/or bad) on the laptop? Would RAM speeds of 2666 and/or 3200 work with my laptop if the RAM added up to 32 GB? Looking on Crucial, my laptop does support RAM speeds of 2400, 2666, and 3200, but I want to be certain that this is the case and have an idea of what to expect if I do go through with it.

OK -- I got it -- as you do need more RAM to run VMs without causing your native OS to grind to a crawl.

As to the RAM speed, the memory controller in your PC will throttle all the RAM at the speed of the slowest RAM you have. So, if you mix 2400 and 3200, those will all run at 2400.

Windows Update, which has been running every week, also fills up your drive because it does not clean up old files when it is done.

Here are some things you can do to recover some of the disk space:

Also, the community Win10 Forums has the following suggestions:

Finally, there is a freeware app known as Wise Disk Cleaner. I use it every day to get rid of junk files: https://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-disk-cleaner.html
