Envy x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I want to upgrade the HDD on my son's Envy x360 laptop, model 15m-cn0012dx.

The existing Western Digital HDD is 250G, and has both B and M notches, which implies this it might be a SATA drive.  The socket on the motherboard only has an M notch, which implies that the bus is PCI-e.  The specs on the HP website say that my unit came with a 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD.

In selecting a replacement M.2 SSD, do I have to stick to SATA (with the two notches), or can I replace the SSD with a faster PCI model (with only an M notch)?  Are there any changes I need to make (such as in the BIOS) to move from the presumably SATA SSD to a PCI-e one?  Thanks.

Its specs

It actually has  256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD. I don't know why machine has M.2 SATA drive (as you say) and Crucial also says it only supports M.2 SATA drives

            https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/envy-x360-15m-cn0012dx

and page 1 of the manual says the series has following options (pre installed)

  • 1-TB, 2280, peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe)-3×4, non-volatile memory express (NVMe), SuperSpeed (SS) solid-state drive with triple-level cell (TLC)
  •  512-GB, 2230, PCIe-3×2, NVMe solid-state drive with TLC
  •  512-GB, 2280, PCIe, NVMe solid-state drive
  •  360-GB, 2280 PCIe-3x4, NVMe, solid-state drive with TLC
  •  256-GB, 2230, PCIe-3×2, NVMe solid-state drive with TLC
  •  256-GB, 2280, PCIe, NVMe solid-state drive

I would go for M.2 VNMe SSD

Regards.
