pavilion 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Existing RAM?8 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB)

i am planning to upgrade the ram from 8 to 16 by adding an extra 8GB

However, i found that instruction confusing me

Two SODIMM slots - customer non-accessible/non-upgradeable
DDR4-2133 Dual Channel Support (DDR4-2400 bridge to DDR4–2133)
Supports up to 16GB max system memory
4096MB (4096MB x 1)
6144MB (2048MB x 1 + 4096MB x 1)
8192MB (4096MB x 2)
8192MB (8192MB x 1

If i get   [ 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM   ],  compatible? but speed will be locked down to 2133MHz

Then how about 8GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM ?    (DDR4-2400 bridge to DDR4–2133)  It mentioned 2400 could work with 2133 by matching the lower speed RAM  , but it doesnt mention how about the speed above 2400 , that is >2666?

is it going to operate at speed of 2133 or not compatible

Thanks

Hi:

PC4-2666 should also bridge to 2133 MHz.

Crucial offers compatible memory, and some of the modules are 2666 MHz and even PC4-3200.

thank you very much 😀

Ordered one stick from

https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct8g4sfs8266/ct11897056

2666 still  $ cheaper than 2400 or 2133, never mind it eventually just clockdown to 2133 but happy to grab 1😀

Unplugging the charging cable when working inside a notebook. Safe enough for this model? for the sake of electrostatic charge or anthing else?

might be need to change my battery as well since it wont fully charge.

You're very welcome.

You will also need to remove the battery, which is internal.

While you are waiting for the memory chip to show up, consult the service manual for the memory removal and replacement prcoedure.   Chapter 6.

Noted p39.

Before removing the memory, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer. 3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.

after adding ram, there is no need to enter bios or any thing else to set the 2133 that should be autmatically clockdown?

eg. cannot start up normally? etc.

The memory will automatically adjust to the slower 2133 MHz speed.

It will be plug and play. Nothing needed to make the memory work.

Hi Paul

The ram is flawlessly running on my system thank you! but now I have other problems.

In Fig1: default SSD 256GB in my system using m2 SATA( but  cannot upgrade to NVMe) compared to the green circle in Fig2

What is the red and blue circle especially the red one?

my only option is to replace the existing SSD 256gb to large capacity ( 500gb, 1TB M2 SATA) and then leave behind the 256gb SSD

OR

I can remove the optical drive (orange circle on the right-hand side; is it also considered as SATA 2/3 ? )  and follow Fig3 HDD /SSD caddy tray?

That leads to the other question? what is the maximum read-write speed I can expect? 300 with sata2 ? 600 with sata3

No point to get a SSD 2.5 SATA eg. MX500 if the speed is constricted by the orange circle? Then probably I will get a large capacity of HDD drive to store more files instead of getting a capping speed?

Thanks

You're very welcome.

Glad the memory is working well for you.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answers to your other questions, so I suggest you start a new topic on those.
