hp 15-db1225ng
Unknown

Hello there,

i was searching for a laptop for university and came across the hp 15-db1225ng. This laptop seems perfect to me except for two things i can't really find any information about: the storage upgradability (only 256gb might become a problem) and the ram upgradability. So is it possible to fit another hdd/ssd into it? How about another ram slot for dual channel (it's one 8gb stick not 2x4gb right?) or in case i need more?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

You're welcome.

Yes, as you say, it is possible to install a 2.5" HDD or SSD however you will need to purchase these parts:

Hard drive connector board          part number L20454-001

Hard drive bracket                        part number L20455-001

They can be difficult to find and expensive since it is a new model. They will also be much slower (and more expensive since you need to buy extra parts) even than the cheaper PCIe NVMe SSDs on the market such as the Crucial P1

Hope it helps,

Hi,

The RAM is upgradable to 32GB of DDR4 2400MHz (2x16GB) even if service manual mentions 16GB. There are two slots and at the moment there is one 8GB module. So you could easily add another 8GB module or more.

The best idea is not to add a 2.5" HDD, but to upgrade the M2 SSD to a much higher capacity SSD, There is no limit to the capacity.

Thank you for the answer!

I know i could just put a bigger m.2 drive in, but i hoped that there's space for another 2.5" sata ssd, so i can still use the included 256gb. Is that possible? It looks like there is such a space in the manual, but i'm not sure if the 15-db1225ng has the bracket/connectors for it.

If not i could at least put that one into my desktop i guess.

Thank you again for the fast reply!

Good to know that it's still possible to fit another drive in just in case i need it.

But i also think that a bigger m.2 (nvme) ssd is better since the extra charge compared to sata ssds isn't that high.

I think I'm getting a 1tb Crucial P1 for now.

You're welcome.

Yes, I believe it is a good choice. You will need to reinstall the OS on the SSD. Here is a small guide in case you need it. You can always get back to me if/when you perform the upgrade:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (before replacing drive in PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

All the best,

David
