I did a hardware diagnostics test on my laptop. It showed that it failed to pass the short drive self test and asked me to contact HP support. so since my warranty expired, they wouldnt tell me how to fix it or what the specific problem is.

Hi,
It means the Hard Drive has a hardware problem and needs to be replaced.
You can insert a 2.5" Hard Drive from your preferred brand (7.2mm thickness) or a 2.5 " SATA3 SSD of your preferred brand and capacity.
on page 36 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive

You could also just upgrade the M2 SSD to a higher capacity (no limit) M2 PCIe NVMe SSD of your preferred brand. That way you could just remove the 2.5" Drive.
Hope it helps,
David
