Hi, @lam11

Below is the link to the Crucial memory report for your notebook.

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/envy-15-u493cl

The max is 2 x 8 GB

You would get a little more performance out of it by removing the 4 GB chip and replacing it with an 8 GB chip.

Not only would you gain 4 GB of memory, but the memory will also run in the higher performing dual channel mode, vice the lower performing single channel mode as it is now with 12 GB installed.

When a memory slot is empty, or your notebook has mismatched memory capacities installed (such as what you have now), the memory runs in the lower performing single channel mode.

You may have heard that games and applications perform better with dual channel memory compared to single channel memory, but why is this the case, and how much of an improvement can you expect? In this comparison I've benchmarked 16 different games in a laptop at all setting levels as well as 9 ...

@lam11

Just curious -- but WHY are you determined to spend so much money on such a huge amount of RAM?

In general use, anything above 8GB is basically wasting your money.

IF you are going to get into really process-intensive Gaming, the video chip and processor will both throttle your performance to the degree that you will see no gain from all this extra expense.

Thank you for your reply. I am currently struggling to run anything more than basic browsing with my laptop. So I was not sure how much situation will improve with 16 Gb RAM. So wanted to explore this an an option.

Thank you for your reply. Looks like my option is going to 16 Gb RAM max. I will go for that option. May be part of my problems related to slow performance are  because of single channel operation.

You're very welcome.

Another thing you can do to pep up the performance would be to replace the slow mechanical 1 TB, 5,400 RPM had drive it has, with a better performing 2.5" SSD.

If you don't need the 1 TB of drive space, you can get a 500 GB model like this for less than $65 dollars.

You can clean install W10 using the media creation tool at the link below and create a bootable W10 installation flash drive.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.
