i dont know how many memory slots my laptop has because some sites are reporting 2 slots (including cmd), whereas others are reporting only 1 slot (including task manager)

According to Chapter 1 of the service manual, there are two memory slots.

 

Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)

 

The Crucial memory report for your notebook indicates the same...2 x 8 GB of memory is supported.
