how do I repair a17-x115dx hinge

Well it depends on the extent of the damage. Hinges are not repaired; they are replaced. How old is the laptop? Can you describe the issue a little bit. I can help you do this but I will warn you that very few users actually go through with the repair once they figure out what is involved. Sometimes HP will step in and offer help as well.

Thank you,  the right hinge catches when trying to close the lid and the plastic separates on the screen side. It seems as if the hinge is broken internally or what ever held it in place on the screen side is no longer holding because it is broken. I figured it may take a new hinge but wasn't sure .

Huffer, did you see my last post? Do you have any suggestions?

Yes sorry I do not work for HP and only check these irregularly. Was hoping HP would come in. The hinges themselves are cheap. Replace in pairs. However, there may be additional damage inside to the mounting points for the hinges, making it impossible to just replace them. The laptop needs to be disassembled and the damage evaluated before formulating a repair plan.

You will want to follow the procedure beginning on p. 69 of the Manual for removal of the screen assembly:

These are the hinges by HP Part No.

As I said, hinges themselves are not expensive. It's the labor and the possible need to replace the base assembly, etc. that makes this job so much fun:
