HP Notebook - 17-ca0064cl

I may need to replace my hard drive apon short dst test warning. It no longer boots into OS but would like to attempt data recovery with a reader. I have a model 5KJ19UA#ABA. Without opening it up yet can I get the hard drive make/model/type?

If you replace the HDD with a 2.5"(7mm) SSD, it will fit right into the place where the HDD was.

2.5" (7mm) SATA-3, TLC laptop HDD or SSD

If you are interested in an M.2 SSD you may have to purchase the Solid-state drive board L24487-001 and the Solid-state drive bracket L22535-001.

You won't know if those parts for an M.2 SSD are needed until you open the laptop.

M.2 SSD specification , PCIe, NVMe or , SATA-3, TLC

Thank you!! I know its not a ssd installed so I can figure the reader adapter would be for a 2.5" then? For replacement I plan to only replace with the same type.

The OEM HDD and the 2.5"(7mm) SSD are both SATA interface connected.

You would be  far better off with a 1TB SATA-3 SSD for an incredible performance boost. Pricewise, compared to the old school HDD, it is a win-win.

I have no idea as to what you are calling a reader.

That is not how trying to recover a failed HDD works.

You will need recovery software  and a USB to SATA adapter or paying a recovery company to attempt to recover data from an HDD with a failure.  There is no guarantee of success in the data recovery.

To connect the HDD externally you will need a USB 2.0 to SATA adapter.

Thank you again.. Yes. Not reader, Meant adapter. So if not booting OS I am potentially at a data loss. Its not important data but I figure I may give it a whirl (with software) anyway. You have been helpful enough to persuade me to uograde to ssd. Just curious though, Are the adapters with a power supply any better?

HP Recommended

The adapters with a power supply are indeed better.

Using one of those won't stress the USB circuitry and that is better for the service life of the laptop's system board.

Last question. Given I dont have an ssd now I will likely need the new board and bracket as you suggeted?
