reading on the net some say remove the dvd drive and it will work I did not and it did boot but then the next time it did not just the one brink on the cap light

I also read it means the CPU is bad   I have not tried switching them yet as I have a second unit I can get a cpu (processor from)

Hi @TJ8799,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing some complex issues with your HP DV7-4069WM laptop. The symptoms you’re describing—such as the blinking cap lock light, no video output, intermittent booting, and a frozen touchpad—could be indicative of several potential problems. Here’s a step-by-step approach to diagnosing and troubleshooting the issue:

1. Interpreting the Cap Lock Blink Code

The blinking Cap Lock light on HP laptops usually indicates a specific error code. The pattern of blinks can help identify the problem:

  • One Blink: This often indicates a hardware problem or a power issue.
  • Long Blink + Short Blinks: The pattern of blinks can give more precise information. Check the HP support website or your laptop's service manual to decode the exact meaning.

2. Check and Reseat Components

  • Ensure the laptop is powered off and unplugged from any power source.
  • Open the back panel and reseat the RAM modules. Try booting with one module at a time if you have more than one.
  • If you're comfortable doing so, reseat the CPU. Ensure there’s no dust or debris in the socket.

Remove and Reseat the DVD Drive:

  • Sometimes, removing the DVD drive can help. Try booting with and without it to see if there’s a difference.

3. Check for Faulty Hardware

  • Since you have a second unit, swap the CPU to see if that resolves the issue. If the problem persists with the new CPU, it may not be the CPU causing the issue.:
  • Connect an external monitor to see if the problem is related to the laptop's screen or the graphics subsystem.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB devices, external drives) and try booting again.

4. Inspect for Physical Damage

  • Ensure that all internal cables and connectors are securely connected.
  • Inspect the motherboard and other components for signs of physical damage or overheating.

5. Try a Hard Reset

  1. Perform a Hard Reset:
    • Disconnect all power sources and remove the battery.
    • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
    • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try to boot the laptop.

6. BIOS/UEFI Reset

  1. Reset BIOS/UEFI:
    • If possible, enter BIOS/UEFI settings and perform a reset to default settings.

7. Check Power Supply

  1. Test the Power Adapter:
    • Ensure that the power adapter is working correctly. If possible, test with another compatible power adapter.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I will try these thing I don't understand is

the DVD drive Remove and Reseat the DVD Drive why does that work?

Hardware can that be a CPU ?  or mostly the motherboard

as sometimes it may show on a external screen but not the laptop screen even thro both the screen and video cable have been replaced

Thank you

Update

I took and did the list still did not show video after the 3rd restart so I took it apart cleaned the other Processor and switched  them out as I had a extra one from another board

it booted on first try and booted three times no problem I went into windows no problems

So either it was a bad CPU or maybe it was not locked in all the way

Fixed
