Could Wolf Security be blocking 2025-11 Security Update (KB5068861) (26200.7171) from installing?

Hi zdex

Yes, it is highly possible that Wolf Security (or any third-party antivirus/security suite) is interfering with and blocking the installation of the 2025-11 Security Update (KB5068861).

While there are many potential causes for this update failing (including corrupted files, component store issues, or the generic error codes 0x800f0983  and 0x800f0922 that users are reporting), third-party security software is a very common culprit for large Windows Update failures.

Security suites like Wolf Security operate at a deep system level and can:

  • Lock critical system files needed by the update.
  • Terminate Windows Update services (like BITS or wuauserv) because their behavior looks suspicious.
  • Conflict with the file injection process during the final installation phase, especially on HP systems where Wolf Security is often deeply integrated.

 Recommended Fixes

If you suspect Wolf Security is the cause, here are the steps you should try, starting with the least invasive:

  1. Temporarily Disable Wolf Security

The most direct troubleshooting step is to temporarily disable the security software's real-time protection before attempting the update.Open Wolf Security: Find the icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner), right-click it, and look for an option to Disable or Stop Protection.Run the Update: Immediately go back to Windows Update and try installing KB5068861 again.Re-enable: If the update succeeds or fails, immediately re-enable Wolf Security's protection.

  1. Manual Installation via Microsoft Update Catalog

If the Windows Update process fails, downloading and installing the update package directly can bypass certain conflicts.

  • Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for KB5068861.
  • Download the correct .msu file for your Windows version (e.g., Windows 11 x64).
  • Run the downloaded file to install it manually.

I hope the above is helpful

The way I fixed it is as follows:

Settings > Windows update > Advanced options > Recovery > Fix problems using windows update

Click on "Reinstall now" This will download the latest version 25H2 build 26200.7171 and fix any issues and update all system files without removing any apps or settings.

After it is complete you can check your windows version by pressing Windows key + R and typing winver
