Hi @Misterart,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how confusing and frustrating it must be to see a black screen on your laptop after a Windows update, especially when it still works with a projector.

Your Device: HP Pavilion dm4-3055dx Entertainment Notebook PC

If your laptop screen went black after a Windows 10 update but still works with an external display (like a projector), it’s likely due to a graphics driver conflict or LCD backlight issue triggered by the update.

Here’s What You Can Do to Fix It

Updated Steps to Fix Black Screen (Internal Display Only)

1. Use BIOS Recovery Shortcut

This can help if the last Windows update corrupted display firmware or settings:

  • Turn off the laptop completely.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press the Power button for 1 second.
  • Keep holding Windows + B for about 40 seconds.
  • If successful, you’ll hear beeps and see the BIOS recovery screen.

This may restore the last working display configuration.

2. Switch Display Output Using Keyboard

Sometimes Windows defaults to the external display after an update:

  • Press Windows + P to open the display mode menu.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the PC screen only and press Enter.
  • Repeat this while connected to the projector to confirm the internal screen isn’t disabled.

3. Check Backlight Functionality

Shine a flashlight directly onto the laptop screen. If you can faintly see the desktop or login screen, the LCD backlight may have failed. This is a hardware issue and would require repair.

4. Reset Windows Display Settings

If you're able to use the projector:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display
  • Click Detect to force Windows to recognize the internal screen
  • Set the internal screen as the Primary display

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
