Dear HP,

For a while now, when performing Windows updates, arbitrary HP Inc. - Software Component  driver updates keep showing up under Optional Updates. The desicription above it always says "if you have a specific problem, one of these drivers might help." But when I do a google search for the HP Software Component & version, rarely does anything come up for these ghost drivers, at all.

How do I know if I need to install an HP Software Component driver update for my HP laptop if it doesn't say - and I can't find, what the optional driver update is for?

How can HP customers find information on the different HP Inc. Software Component drivers Windows Updates routinely lists?

Thanks!

UPDATE 7/21/21

One of the updates I mentioned in OP, HP Inc. - SoftwareComponent - 4.2.629.0 is no longer an optional update. Today it appeared as a required update listed along with the daily Windows Defender Antivirus update. No longer able to opt out.

Comparing similarities and differences on Microsoft's Update Catalogue site, it appears anything with the title "HP Inc. - SoftwareComponent" are "Windows 10 and later drivers, Windows 10 S and Later Servicing Drivers". A monthly rollout of HP related drivers for HP related products. The catalogue entry provides no info on which products its for, what it is, what it does, or what it fixes.

There are a few issues I have with my laptop, low external speaker volume, wifi struggles to hold a signal at times, heat issues, minor in nature but an inconvenience HP should work to provide solutions for. Knowing what each monthly Software Component update is for and why one would move from optional to required could help shed light and solve issues.

@Airhaun

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I understand that your HP notebook is not working correctly.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing a system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
