Hello,

I'm encountering error 601 on my laptop, which is brand new (only two months old). I tried running the battery test, but it gets stuck at 10% and then the laptop shuts down.
What should I do?

Hi @Emasentu

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're facing this issue—especially with a new HP Omen 16 laptop. It’s incredibly frustrating when your system shows a battery error and then shuts down during diagnostics.

Let’s walk through a few steps that can help resolve this and get your laptop back to full strength.

What Battery Error 601 Means

This error indicates that the primary internal battery’s storage capacity is significantly below expected levels. It’s triggered during startup by the BIOS and may be caused by:

  • A battery that isn’t charging properly
  • A calibration issue
  • Environmental factors like low operating temperature
  • A hardware fault in rare cases

Steps to Resolve the Issue

1. Update the BIOS

Outdated BIOS firmware can misreport battery status. Updating it may resolve the error:

  • Visit the official HP driver page:
HP Omen 16 Drivers and BIOS
  • Select your exact model and download the latest BIOS update.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions carefully during installation.

2. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

This tool performs a deeper battery check:

  • Shut down your laptop completely.
  • Press the power button, then immediately tap Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Check and run the test.

If the test still stalls or shuts down, it may indicate a deeper battery fault.

3. Perform Battery Calibration

If diagnostics suggest calibration, follow these steps:

  • Fully charge the battery until the indicator shows 100%.
  • Unplug the charger and let the laptop discharge completely until it shuts down.
  • Plug it back in and charge it fully again without interruption.

This helps reset the battery’s charge reporting mechanism.

4. Check for HP Support Assistant Updates

HP Support Assistant can also run battery checks and suggest fixes:

You're doing the right thing by investigating this early. If you'd like help walking through any of these steps, I’m here to guide you. Let’s get your system running reliably again.
