Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

Any help will be appreciated. Battery only charges when switched off, hibernation or closed/ in sleep. The adapter indicator is on, there's power otherwise it wouldn't charge at all.

I'e tried uninstalling drivers and restarting then draining and recharging 3 times. Hasn't worked.

Any other suggestions? Would be good if there was a solution other than having to take it to a tech under warranty.

Many thanks in advance

@littlecheeza,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

What is the exact model for your computer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you update the BIOS on the computer from the below link and check if it helps.

Follow the steps in the below article to perform a BIOS update.

Have performed BOIS update.

The problem has not been resolved.

The adapter LED is on, it still charges when the lid is closed or laptop is switched off so the charger clearly works. It simply stops charging when in use.

Thank you for posting back.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.

BIOS default: ( Do not ignore any steps even its repeated steps)

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Next perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant:

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I will try them. But how long is this going to go on for. It's a simple problem that seems to be endemic within hp.

If you latest fix doesnt work, I want a refund, not a replacement or faff around with new 'fixes' so I can purchase a different make.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.
