HP 14-cf2000 Laptop PC (552L9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

When I turn on my computer, the screen is black. The caps lock button blinks 5 times. 3 long times and 2 short times. This has never happened. I was just trying to use my computer one day and it was just blank. Usually, if i dont use my computer after awhile, it would have options to update, reset, shut down, etc. I've tried everything I can, but nothing works. It does not have a removable battery. I would have to unscrew it for tht. This is my second hp laptop.  The first one's screen is broken on the inside I think, so that's why I don't use it. I just need to know what to do to fix my current one. I use it with an HDMI cord to a separate screen, but it still won't worl even if the screen is black. What do I need to do?

Hi @Mari2208,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how concerning it is when your HP 14-cf2000 Laptop PC only shows a black screen with the Caps Lock blinking. Thank you for sharing the details.

On HP notebooks, the blinking Caps Lock pattern is a diagnostic code. The 3 long + 2 short blinks (5 total) indicate a Memory failure. That’s why the display stays black, even when connected to an external monitor.

Here are a few steps you can still try:

  1. Hard Reset
    • Disconnect the power adapter.
    • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    • Reconnect the adapter and try powering on again.

  2. BIOS Recovery
    • With the laptop off, hold Windows + B (or Windows + V) and then press the Power button.
    • Keep holding Windows + B for about 5–10 seconds.
    • If successful, the BIOS recovery screen will appear.

  3. If the black screen and blinking code continue, this confirms a hardware failure on the system board, which will require HP service to repair or replace.

Since the device doesn’t have a removable battery and you’ve already tried an external display, we recommend contacting HP Support to arrange service options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
