I am attempting to reformat my HP Laptop 15-dy2258ca (837W6UA) and am running into an issue with hardware detection and driver loading.

I've downloaded and confirmed the MS Windows 11 installer is downloaded directly from the Microsoft site.

From what I've read downloading the Rapid Storage Technology driver should have resolved the issue, (I have tried (https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp146501-147000/sp146929.exe, https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp152501-153000/sp152863.exe, and https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19512/intel-rapid-storage-technology-driver-install...).

 Win11, Win11 21H2, Win11 22H2. I extracted each onto another USB drive.

I've also attempted a permutation of installing other drivers from https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers/hp-15-f2000-laptop-pc-series/model/2100381733?sku=837W6UA .

The issue I see is when I select a driver and attempt to install the drivers, I get either "A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be the DVD, USB or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now." or "Error installing driver".

Navigating and retrying listed driver, with and without "Hide drivers that aren't compatible with this computer's hardware". after three days of trying, I am at a loss.

What am I missing?

If you are having issues loading the Intel storage controller drivers, your notebook is supported by the HP cloud recovery tool.

You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reset the drive to its 'out of the box' condition.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive for this.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

Since you have to use the software on another PC as yours is not working, you will need to enter your PC's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed.

@jk900,

I have a15-dy2xxx model with the same Intel i5 11th gen processor as yours.

I extracted the F6 folder from sp146929 and copied it to a Windows installation usb drive created with Microsoft media Creation Tool.

When I navigated to the F6 folder after clicking on Load Driver, the installation setup loaded an IRST VMD driver and displayed the storage drive.

All IRST drivers the setup needs to have are in the F6 folder. Did you copy the F6 folder to a W11 installation usb drive? Did you use MS Media Creation Tool to create a bootable W11 installation usb drive?

The extracted files did contain the F6 folder which contains... iaStorVD.cat iaStorVD.sys RstMwService.exe iaStorVD.inf RstMwEventLogMsg.dll. I get the issue as mentioned in my original post.

Unfortunately running the Media Creation Tool on the system is not an option, (as it is the reason why I am reinstalling the OS). I got the image ISO directly from the Microsoft site.

The F6 folder I extracted had the exactly the same five files you listed.

When I navigated to the F6 folder, the installation setup displayed two .inf driver files, shown below, and when either of them was selected, the storage drive was displayed.

Your original post implies that the setup even didn't display those driver files, even though the F6 folder contained correct files.

This leads me to think the way your Windows installation usb drive was created or the usb itself is the cause of the problem.

I don't know what utility tool you used to mount the ISO file on the usb drive. If you didn't use Rufus, you can try it.

You need an 8 GB usb drive for a bootable Windows installation drive. You can try a different usb drive.

Those are my only suggestions. If you still have the problem, you can try HP Cloud Recovery Tool.

I've attempted this several times and when given the option to load the driver, the driver cannot be found, (as noted in my previous post). I was successful with having to create a new HP restore image, (however, I am very disappointed that the factory image bloatware is included).

This was the best solution that I was able to get working. Unfortunately, the McAfee AV bloat and HP assistance software, (and I'm assuming other bloat), was also installed. Thanks for your help.

I did inform you that the cloud recovery tool would restore the drive to its 'out of the box' condition, so it should have been no surprise to you that the factory image bloatware was included.
