Hi there @MT510, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

The “Critical Process Died” error typically indicates that a key Windows process has unexpectedly terminated, often due to driver issues, corrupted system files, or hardware problems. Let's walk through some steps to resolve this:

Boot into Safe Mode

If the laptop keeps rebooting, try booting into Safe Mode:

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Turn it on and press F11 repeatedly to enter Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • After restart, press F4 to enter Safe Mode.

If F11 doesn’t work, try interrupting boot 3 times (force shutdown during boot) to trigger recovery.

Run System File Checker

Once in Safe Mode:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run:sfc /scannow

This checks and repairs corrupted system files.

Check for Disk Errors

Still in Command Prompt, run:

chkdsk /f /r

You may be prompted to schedule a scan on next reboot. Type Y and restart.

Update or Roll Back Drivers

  • In Safe Mode, open Device Manager.
  • Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark.
  • Right-click and choose Update driver or Roll back driver if the issue started after a recent update.

Perform a System Restore

If the issue started recently:

  • Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
  • Choose a restore point before the issue began.

BIOS and Driver Updates

Visit HP’s support site for your laptop model: Official HP® Support

Make sure:

  • BIOS is up to date.
  • Chipset and storage drivers are current.

Reset Windows (if needed)

If none of the above works:

  • Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
  • Choose Keep my files to preserve personal data.

If the suggestions helped solve the problem, please let us know by clicking “Accepted Solution.” It really helps fellow users find quick answers.

A quick “Yes” also goes a long way in showing appreciation!

Take care and happy computing!

Best regards,

Max3Aj
