For noise and durability reasons, I have the habit of downgrading the max frequency of the processor but had no luck this time. For that matter, I adjust the power settings in Windows leaving the max setting to 99% or less (often around 80% in the summer). Unfortunately, these settings have no effect whatsoever on this machine: I went all the way down to 50% and can't see any difference. I even tried to set the TDP to 10W with no difference. The BIOS does not have power settings options either.

 

What should I do?

HP Computers / Notebook uses a customized BIOS setting (Tattooed BIOS) of which some features including overclocking and increasing the VRAM are locked.


This is done in the best interest of safeguarding the PC for the optimal performance and not to cause any extensive component failure.


To conclude, the VRAM and Processor Speed on your Notebook is already shared with a specific value and its locked and cannot be changed.

Thanks for the answer, which was a great way of not addressing the customer's concern 😕 If it is really the case, there is a good chance that it won't last as long a other machines that I owned...

 

But I've found an alternative way of bringing the temperature down to a more conservative range at OS level. BR

You can use 3rd party tools to overclock or change the VRAM but those tools are not recommended by HP

If you read carefully the initial posting, I'm not looking to overclock my machine but "underclock" it. Reaching 75°C in the winter with no particular software installed is a sign that the machine is unnecessarily stressed by the default factory settings. With a room temperature reaching 30°C and above in the summer, the CPU would reach 85°C, which is too close to the danger zone.

 

Using a conservative Windows config brought the temperature down to 30°C to 40°C in general, with peaks below 60°C, which is what I hoped the Support Community would help with....

You may try updating the Bios, chipset and graphics card drivers on your PC either from our HP support website, using this link or download it using HP support assistant.

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

 

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

 

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available
