On startup, my password box will sometimes fill with characters without my toughing the keyboard as though a key is held down. Sometimes it goes on for dozens of characters. On those rare occasions where it doesn't fill itself, it does so when I touch a key (any key). The result is that I can't enter my password and login. This started suddenly a few days ago as I was filling out a form online--strings of random characters started appearing as I was typing. I have not not updated windows or any drivers recently. Also, I scanned for viruses and malware and nothing turned up. Any ideas?

Hello,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome !
Since you report this started to happen due to the online form, you can try to scan for threats you these free and reliable utilities:
ESET Online Scanner >> https://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner-popup/ (from ESET www.eset.com)
SurfRight HitmanPro >> http://www.surfright.nl/en/intronew
I know you already scanned/checked but not sure if you tried these tools.
After that, you can try to revert back to a previous state using System Restore.
You can restore back your system settings and important system files to a point before the initial problem started (e.g. a day or two before the online form). More info and how-to-instructions >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03327545
If the above does not help, you can also consider to use a Win 8/8.1 function called "Refresh your PC" which will erase all potentially malicious stuff, replace essential Windows elements and will keep your personal files. Here is more information >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03538721
Hope this helps 🙂
