@heidif1223, Welcome to HP Support Community.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and I appreciate your intention to repurpose the notebook for your daughter.

If the HP notebook is locked with a Windows login password and you don’t have access to the account, here are a few options to help you regain access:

Option 1: Try Resetting the Password (if it's a Microsoft Account)

If the notebook uses a Microsoft account to log in (you’ll see an email address on the login screen), you can reset the password online:

  1. Go to Microsoft Password Reset
  2. Follow the prompts to reset the password using the email address shown on the login screen.

Option 2: Use a Local Account (No Email Shown)

If it’s a local account (just a name, no email), and you don’t know the password, you’ll need to reset the PC to remove the password and start fresh.

Reset the Notebook (This will erase all data)

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly until the Choose an option screen appears.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  4. Choose Remove everything to fully reset the notebook.

This will erase all files, apps, and settings, including the password, and restore the notebook to factory condition.

Important Notes:

  • If the notebook has BitLocker encryption enabled, you may be asked for a recovery key. If you don’t have it, the reset may not work.
  • If the notebook is linked to a school or work account, it may have security policies that prevent resetting. In that case, contact the organization’s IT department.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
