Computer Wont Start (Normal or Safe Mode) ; Blue Screens

I have an HP Pavilion DV6 Notebook PC. The other day, it crashed and gave a blue screen error. Since then, it wont start. Ive tried starting it normally and in safe mode, neither work. This is the information given in the blue screen.:

win32k.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFF901C066263C, 0X0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF9600006CCA3, 0x0000000000000005)

***      win32k.sys - Address FFFFF9600006CCA3 base at FFFFF96000000000, Datestamp 53c5df64

When it first crashed, I was playing a game, then the screen got all pixelated, then the blue screen. The computer has had overheating problems because the fan doesn't work 100%. It would shut off often from overheating, but I cleaned the vents out thuroughly, and it hasn't overheated since then. I just want to know if anyone can tell what's wrong by the information above, or if more info is needed. Since the computer wont start, I cant get to the crash dump files. Any information is appreciated!

You could find model name/number with help of this:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

Which operating system are you using? - windows vista , 7, 8, 8.1?

Are you not able to get in to the BIOS setup - tap ESC /F10 for setup options/ F11 for recovery :

Hi

I'm no expert in bsod - may be someone else could help you in dump files , but I'll help for as little as I can here,

Win32k.sys occurs due to recent hardware changes , out date drivers like graphics etc,

What is your OS , 32 or 64 bit, model name, model number?

Have you updated Windows updates - check in control panel, - view installed updates, when was last update done?

Re: Computer Wont Start (Normal or Safe Mode) ; Blue Screens

It's 64 bit, model name and number I don't know. Since I can't actually boot up the computer, I can't check when the last update was done but it was probably a week before it happened.

Re: Computer Wont Start (Normal or Safe Mode) ; Blue Screens

Yea I can get into the BIOS.

Notebook model is HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
Product Number is QE068UA#ABA
The OS is windows 7

From what I've read about the the update, it sounds like the culprit. Only problem is I don't have the installation media to boot with. Even worse, the disk drive doesn't work. I know I can put the ISO for boot media on a flash drive and boot like that, but I don't know where to get the boot media without having to buy another copy of windows. Also, if I put windows 8 boot media on a thumb drive could I use that even though I have windows 7?

Hi

This is your product specs

You have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit version.

If your can enter BIOS, first test the hard drive & memory - extensive test so that you can got ahead with windows 7 recovery/ installation repair from ISO.

After this,

If you can enter recovery partition from BIOS tapping F11 as given in the above document, you could do the repair from it - there will be options to repair, entering safe mode from there & follow Microsoft Known Fix 3 in their KB article (which I've provided above)

Related:

Please read - What to do when Windows August Update blue screens your laptop?

If you're not able to enter HP recovery console,
You can order for the Recovery discs directly from HP (BEST OPTION) & do a repair, they will send it for free if you're under warranty.

Contact HP.

Else,
Does the laptop still have the Certificate of Authentication sticker on its back? Can you clearly make out legibly the 25-character COA product activation code?
If so,
I can link you to a place to download a disk image but you would need another computer (working) to burn a DVD or make a bootable thumb drive -

These are .iso files which need to be burned to a disk using specific software or you can use this Microsoft USB/DVD tool .

ONLY IF ABOVE REPAIR IS NOT WORKING WITH THE ISO, GO AHEAD DOING CLEAN INSTALL -

You can save off your drivers from your product website too if there comes a need to do clean install Windows 7 ( if repair is not working & you've no Recovery discs/is not willing to order one):

First download , save the AMD Chipset Drivers. You want the first file listed on the webpage.

Then download, save all the necessary drivers.

This thread will help you in that, HP Expert @lasvegaswireman explains how to do it,

don't download the drivers from the thread (it's specific to that thread, just follow the method).

You can't use Windows 8 in your Windows 7 system as there's no activation keys for that, you've to buy that from Microsoft.

Re: Computer Wont Start (Normal or Safe Mode) ; Blue Screens

I downloaded the windows 7 system repair ISO from a website and put it on a flash drive. With it, I was able to system restore to before the update, and it works Smiley Happy Thanks very much for all the help! Its such a relief to have it working again!

You're most welcome Smiley Happy

Glad I could be of any help to you ,

Those 4 updates are pulled back by Microsoft few days back,

So it'll not be available for download anymore.
