I just bought this laptop new & it continues to restart in the middle of what I am doing. It will say there is a temporary issue & restart. There are no known issues. It is new. I am so angry that it keeps happening & I loose my work.

@HhH94549, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm really sorry to hear you're facing this issue with your new HP Notebook, it’s understandably frustrating to lose work due to unexpected restarts. Let’s work together to get this resolved quickly.

Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes, new devices need to complete pending updates that can cause instability until fully installed.

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
  • Install all available updates and restart the laptop.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Let’s rule out any hardware faults.

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly at startup to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the System Tests > Extensive Test (takes 2+ hours) to check memory, CPU, and storage.

Check for HP Software & Driver Updates

Use HP Support Assistant to ensure all drivers and firmware are up to date.

Review Reliability Monitor

Windows logs critical errors that can help pinpoint the cause.

  • Press Windows + R, type perfmon /rel, and press Enter.
  • Look for red Xs around the time of the restarts. Click them to see error details.

Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure

This will help capture the error message instead of instantly rebooting.

  • Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Startup and Recovery.
  • Uncheck Automatically restart under System failure.

Perform a Clean Boot

This helps identify if a third-party app or service is causing the issue.

Consider a Factory Reset (if issue persists)

If none of the above helps, a factory reset may resolve deeper software conflicts.

  • Backup your data first.
  • Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC and choose Remove everything

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
