My HDD died and I have replaced with a SSD. I have old recovery backup disks but they will be way old and need many Windows updates. Is there an easy way for me to ge the operating system reloaded that will be up to date?

The only way to get the latest version of W10 would be to do a clean install by making a bootable USB installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below:
Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
After W10 has completed installing you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.
