Hi @JPM122

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Since your HP Notebook – 15-y144tu (Product ID 1HP99PA#ABG) is an older model, HP no longer provides factory recovery media for it. But you still have some options to get it running again with a new SSD:

Options for Recovery / Reinstall

1. Check HP Cloud Recovery Tool (unlikely for this model)

HP has a Cloud Recovery Tool for supported models, but your 15-y144tu is probably too old to be on that list. Worth a quick check though.

2. Windows Installation Media (recommended)

Since your notebook originally shipped with Windows 10 (64-bit, Home edition), your license key is embedded in the BIOS. That means:

You can download the official Windows 10 installation media from Microsoft for free:
👉 Download Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

Create a bootable USB (8GB or larger).

Install Windows 10 on the new SSD.

During setup, choose “I don’t have a product key” → Windows will automatically activate once connected to the internet (because the key is stored in firmware).

This gives you a clean system, fully genuine, without needing HP’s recovery media.

3. Drivers & HP Software

After installing Windows:

Go to HP Support – 15-y144tu Drivers

Download & install:

Chipset

Graphics (AMD or Intel depending on config)

Audio

Wireless/LAN

HP Support Assistant can also auto-detect drivers.

Recommended Path

Buy the new SSD.

Use Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to install Windows 10 fresh.

Pull drivers from HP’s site.

You’ll end up with a faster and cleaner system than factory restore could ever give.

If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
