HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-df1033dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I cannot give an exact date, but at some point my Navigation Pane Icons under This PC changed from the default:

to this:

Navigation-pane-changed-crop.jpg

Brief history:

  • I have had my HP Spectre x360 (4K display) for about 6 weeks. (Specifications listed at bottom)
  • Initial file transfer was done using Windows (7) East Transfer (migwiz) which I have used on other machines without incident.
  • Using the advanced selection, no settings were transferred, just Documents, Pictures, Music, Video.
  • I do not use any outside themes; just experimented a few times using the built in HP themes.
  • I have gone so far as to try overriding the current icons using the registry modifications mentioned in the Windows 10 forums: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/81222-change-icons-folders-pc-windows-10-a.html
  • When I tried those suggestions the only change which occurred was that the unique icon picture was removed and only the folder icon remained.
  • There are no “exotic” programs on the computer – just Office 365, Adobe Photoshop/Premiere elements, Bootstrap Studio, Inkscape, etc.

Purchased at the same time was an HP Envy x360 laptop which is almost identical in specifications except it has a regular Full HD touchscreen (1920x1080). The Navigation Pane icons there remain as expected shown in the second screenshot

Any ideas what may have caused this and any suggestions how to get the default icons back?

  • HP Spectre x360 15.6
  • 4K UHD display
  • 10th gen i7
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Nvidia graphics
  • 512 SSD

Open File Explorer (formally Windows Explorer)

Tab View

(On the far right of the ribbon), Open Options

Tab General

Next to "Open File Explorer to", click the Down Arrow and adjust the setting (back) to This PC

Click OK to save changes

Hello Dragon-Fur,

Thank you for the quick reply.  Unfortunately the suggested procedure did not resolve the problem.

Even after changing "Open File Explorer to", I still see the incorrect icons.  Tried a restart also, but no joy.
