Can anyone tell me how to open my HP Pavilion laptop if I forgot the password?  I have files on the desktop I’d like to access.

Hi @TicoGuy

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If you've forgotten the password to your HP Pavilion laptop and need access to your desktop files, there are a few safe and structured options to regain access without compromising your data.

I understand how stressful this situation feels—especially when important files are locked away. Let’s walk through your options:

Option 1: Reset Microsoft Account Password (if applicable)

If your laptop uses a Microsoft account to sign in:

  • Visit Microsoft Account Recovery
  • Choose “I forgot my password” and follow the prompts
  • Once reset, use the new password to log in

This is the most direct and secure method if your account is cloud-linked.

Option 2: Use a Password Reset Disk (if created earlier)

If you previously created a password reset disk:

  • Insert the disk or USB drive
  • On the login screen, click “Reset password”
  • Follow the wizard to create a new password

If you don’t have one, skip to the next option.

Option 3: Access files via Safe Mode or another account

If there’s another account on the laptop with admin rights:

  • Restart the laptop and press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly (timing matters)
  • Choose Safe Mode with Networking
  • Log in with the alternate account
  • Access your files and transfer them to an external drive

Option 4: Use HP Cloud Recovery or Windows Installation Media

If all else fails and you need to recover files:

This method avoids full reset and focuses on file access.

  • Avoid third-party password cracking tools—they may compromise your data or violate terms
  • If BitLocker is enabled, you’ll need the recovery key to access encrypted files
  • Once you regain access, consider setting up a password hint or recovery options to avoid future lockouts

Let me know your laptop’s exact model and whether you use a Microsoft account or local login—I can tailor the next steps precisely. You're doing the right thing by seeking help before taking drastic measures.
