Hi @Krissy32,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you have forgotten the local password on your HP laptop, here are some steps you can follow to reset it. Please note that these steps are applicable to Windows 8, but similar steps can apply to other versions of Windows.

Using a Password Reset Disk

  1. Insert Password Reset Disk: If you have previously created a password reset disk, insert it into your laptop.
  2. Reset Password:
    • Attempt to log in with the incorrect password, which will prompt a password reset option.
    • Click on "Reset Password" and follow the instructions provided by the Password Reset Wizard to set a new password.

Changing the Password Using Another Administrator Account

  1. Log in with Another Account: If there is another account on your laptop that has administrator rights, log in to it.
  2. Access Control Panel:
    • Go to the Start screen, type "Control Panel," then select it from the search results.
  3. Manage User Accounts:
    • Click on "User Accounts and Family Safety," then "User Accounts," and subsequently "Manage another account."
  4. Change Password:
    • Choose the account with the forgotten password.
    • Select "Change the password" and input a new password.

Using a Microsoft Account

If your local account is linked to a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online through the Microsoft account recovery page at account.live.com/password/reset.

Other Options

  • Reset the Laptop: If no other methods work, you might need to perform a complete factory reset of the laptop, which will erase all data on the internal drive. Refer to the HP documentation for steps on how to reset your specific laptop model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
