HP Envy 15-as068nr - Prod # W2K78UA#ABA
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I lost the 1st set of USB recovery media I ordered from HP. The website has the link to order but when you get to the last page it says it's not available.  Is there a download link like the HP tech's use when doing home repairs? If not .....where oh where do I order another set? I tried the following company but had no success online -

I will follow up with a call.....just to be sure.

Hi,

You can download the Windows 8.1 iso directly from Microsoft (get the 64-bit one) on a different PC. You do not need product key as it is in firmware.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

Then burn the image to a DVD or use software such as Rufus to create a bootable pendrive

https://rufus.ie/

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Hope it helps,

David

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.  I love where you were going with your reply but there are a few issues.

Yes I can download the iso for windows 8.1 along with using Rufus to get it loaded on a USB drive for install etc. I can also use the assistant to get my drivers all up to date. However, here are a few issues remaining:

1. Without recovery manager, just trying to install any of the 3rd party provided software fails during install. Various errors are displayed depending on the manufacturer. Example - Cyberlink products won't reinstall in this situation or at least they don't for me.

I've only listed Cyberlink but if you check on what my system originally had and did until it crashed.....I am sure you will understand why I want the USB HP Recovery Media to reinstall it all.

Thoughts or suggestions? Please provide a list of HP partners and/or resellers who offer replacement media as mentioned above,

Hi, @mmartin2019

According to the product specs for your notebook, HP shipped it with W10, not W8.1.

There aren't even any W8.1 drivers listed on the support page.

You can order recovery media for the W10 operating system your PC came with from HP at the link below...

Hi @Paul_Tikkanen

Did not really see that 🙂

@mmartin2019

I guess you could use cloud recovery on a different PC and create the recovery drive specific for your notebook. You can see how to do this here

Yes, the cloud recovery client utility does include that model according to the support matrix...

After filtering, the total of the support list is 1
